PEER AMBASSADORS

MEET Rhys

Can you introduce yourself and tell us a fun fact about you?

I love to go skydiving.

What sparked your interest in this apprenticeship?

I was drawn to this apprenticeship because plumbing is such an interesting and complex trade. I’m fascinated by how it combines problem-solving, technical skills, and creativity to design and maintain systems that are essential for everyday life.

What’s been the most epic moment for you during your time as an apprentice?

The most epic moment during my apprenticeship was traveling to William Creek and working away from home. It was an incredible experience that pushed me out of my comfort zone and gave me the chance to see how plumbing projects are handled in a remote setting. It was both challenging and rewarding.

Have you learned any surprising skills that you didn’t expect?

Honestly, most things about plumbing have been surprising to learn. Going into this apprenticeship I had an idea of what plumbing was but didn’t understand how complex and intricate it really is.

What’s a challenge you’ve tackled that made you feel proud?

A challenge I’m really proud of was assisting in supervising my first big job. It was a huge responsibility, and I had to step up to make sure everything ran smoothly. Leading a team and making decisions on-site was a great learning experience, and it gave me a lot of confidence in my abilities.

How do you think this apprenticeship is shaping your future?

This apprenticeship is opening doors for me to work in unique and remote locations, like on submarines or even in Antarctica. which is incredibly exciting for my future.

What do you like to do when you’re not at work? Any cool hobbies?

When I’m not at work, I enjoy riding motorbikes and playing video games. Riding helps me clear my mind and enjoy the outdoors, while gaming is a great way to relax and connect with friends.

What’s your go-to movie, show, or music that keeps you inspired?

I don’t find inspiration in one particular movie, show, or music, but in my work itself. The process of learning something new every day and overcoming challenges is what keeps me motivated and inspired to keep growing.

If you could give one piece of advice to someone thinking about an apprenticeship, what would it be?

My advice would be to go for it, ask heaps of questions and pick the trade that is right for you.

Why do you think apprenticeships are a cool way to kickstart a career?

Apprenticeships are a cool way to kickstart a career because you get to earn while you learn. It’s the perfect balance of gaining practical experience and developing real-world skills.
