Before joining the Defence Industry Pathways Program South Australia (DIPP SA), Ragesh was seeking a clear pathway to stable employment.

Despite holding industry clearances and certifications, securing a full-time salaried role was challenging. Ragesh was already working in the defence industry, but the work was on-call and inconsistent.

After joining DIPP SA, Ragesh quickly gained greater clarity about their career direction.

Ragesh was among the first participants in the intake to be placed with Babcock, completing all rotations with the company while undertaking a Certificate III qualification through TAFE SA.

Throughout the program, Ragesh strengthened their IT and technical foundations and gained exposure to procurement, logistics, AutoCAD, cyber security, 3D printing, simulated welding, and nuclear and naval shipbuilding awareness training. Ragesh also renewed their forklift licence, adding another practical skill to their experience.

“The program strengthened my IT and technical foundations while exposing me to areas I hadn’t experienced before,” Ragesh said.

Another valuable part of the program was learning from experienced trainers and industry professionals who brought real-world knowledge into the classroom and workplace.

During rotations at Babcock, Ragesh continued building capability and confidence. With support from workplace mentors, Ragesh was introduced to Power BI and data analytics, sparking a strong interest that helped shape future career plans.

“Each rotation at Babcock helped me grow gradually, and supportive mentors guided me into Power BI and data analytics, an area I’m now excited to pursue as my long-term career path. I can confidently say I’ve finally found my calling.”

Ragesh also credits PEER with providing support throughout the traineeship by recognising existing skills, finding the right host employer and checking in regularly.

“PEER supported me every step of the way. Their guidance made the traineeship feel structured and supported.”

As the program concluded, speed-dating interviews, resume and interview coaching, and participation in a job expo helped prepare Ragesh for the next stage of their career.

Shortly after completing DIPP SA, Ragesh secured a position as a Research Data Analyst with Kinexus, supporting Shoal Group.

Reflecting on the experience, Ragesh says the program changed the direction of their career.

“DIPP SA truly changed my trajectory and helped me find direction.”
