PEER WELCOMES FEDERAL GOVERNMENT’S ANNOUNCEMENT OF WAGE SUBSIDIES TO HELP 100,000 NEW APPRENTICES AND TRAINEES

The Federal Government has announced it will spend an additional $1.2 billion to encourage businesses to hire 100,000 new apprentices and trainees. Under the ‘Boosting Apprenticeships Commencements’ subsidy, businesses that hire a new apprentice or trainee will qualify for a 50% wage subsidy.

The new subsidy came into effect from 5 October and is available to all businesses, regardless of size, industry or geographic location and is capped at 100,000 places. For eligible employers, the new subsidy will cover 50% of the wages of a new or recommencing apprentice or trainee to the value of $7,000 a quarter, for the period until September 30, 2021.
