PEER CONSTRUCTIONS INTRANET

Smoke free policy

Under the Work Health and Safety Act 2012 (SA) employees must take reasonable care of their own health and safety. PEER Construction is committed to ensuring everyone who may be affected by the organisation’s activities are safe. We are also committed to ensuring that all employees and others, where we have influence and control will meet their responsibilities.

Purpose

The purpose of this policy is to:

  • set a standard for PEER Construction in terms of risks to clients, employee and subcontractors
  • align with the standard set by Work Health and Safety Act 2012 (SA) and Tobacco Products Regulation Act 1997
  • aim to provide a smoke free workforce.

Scope

This policy applies to activities carried out at all PEER Construction sites. PEER Construction is dedicated to providing a healthy, comfortable, and productive workplace for all its employees.

Requirements

Smoking or e-cigarettes (vaping) is NOT permitted by employees, subcontractors, or visitors in external areas of PEER Construction. This includes entrances to buildings and offices. Smoking or e-cigarettes (vaping) is only permitted in designated outdoor smoking areas.

All company vehicles are designated smoke free.

Rationale for the policy

The health hazards related to smoking are well documented. These health hazards impact on both the smoker and the non-smoker who is exposed to the second-hand smoke. Therefore, PEER Construction will provide a smoke free workplace for its employees and visitors.

There are many adverse health effects of passive smoking including:

  • irritation of eyes and nose
  • headaches
  • sore throats and cough
  • potential affects to the cardiovascular system.

Benefits of a smoke free workplace

  • It can enhance the health, safety, and productivity of the workforce. Non-smokers are less likely to be absent due to illness.
  • Employees and visitors are protected from the hazards of second hand smoke. Adults exposed to passive smoking report a higher incidence of chest illness and are more likely to miss work.
  • Smoke free workplaces cater for the majority of people who do not smoke – more than 80 percent of South Australians don’t smoke.
  • A smoke free workplace helps smokers who are trying to quit or cut down. The sight or smell of others smoking can be a major trigger to smoke for those trying to cut down or stop.

PEER Construction will support employees who smoke or vape and would like to make changes to their smoking behaviour. Talk to your manager for more information.

Employees are encouraged to talk to their manager about any aspect of this policy.
