Marking out policy
PEER Construction is committed to the provision of a safe, healthy, and productive workplace. PEER Construction recognises the risk of injury to workers and has developed policies and procedures to reduce this risk.
Purpose
The purpose of this policy is to:
- set a standard for PEER Construction in terms of WHS risks, reduce the chance of mistakes and waste, and PPE requirements when using mark out jobs.
- align with the standard set by Codes of Practice. requirements of legislation, especially Work Health and Safety Act 2012 (SA) and Regulations 2012 (SA).
Scope
Applies to all employees, clients, subcontractors, apprentices, and contractors at PEER Construction. You must apply this procedure to:
- all types of projects and drawings throughout the entire project cycle.
- plans and drawings (regardless of format) prepared for the construction and/or maintenance at PEER Construction. This includes any technical document of an illustrative nature and sketches.
- all such documents, whether produced in house or by external contractors or consultants for works under the control of PEER Construction.
Process
Mark out hand tools include:
- steel ruler, pencil, scriber, felt tip marker and scratch gauge
- engineer’s chalk, chalk line, chalk and centre punch marks
- try square, engineers square, combination square, roofing square and sliding bevel
- marking gauge, mortise gauge, range meter, divider and trammel
- spring dividers, retractable tape, callipers and compass.
When marking out
- Choose the right marking out tool for the job. Tools vary widely and each is designed for a specific purpose.
- Never misuse or abuse any of the accurately machined hand tools designed for marking out.
- Record all measurements, calculation or totals clearly and accurately, using the correct units.
- Carefully handle and align your ruler, try square, sliding bevel or marking gauge, etc. Take the time to “measure twice – cut once”.
- Identify and calculate the quantity, size and type of all materials and tools that will be required for the job and complete the PEER Construction materials order form.
- Complete a serviceability check of all tools and equipment prior to work commencing.
- Leave the work area in a safe, clean and tidy condition.
- Return all marking out hand tools to their appropriate storage cupboard, in a dry environment.
- Regularly clean and maintain marking out hand tools.
- Adjust and sharpen marking gauges and mortise gauges as required.
- Regularly maintain marking out tools to ensure continued accuracy
- Inspect and clean all squares. Remove all surface rust and glue, etc. Discard and replace if damaged.
